Holiday Financial Fraud

Writer's picture: Bay Atlantic FCUBay Atlantic FCU

The holidays are right around the corner and unfortunately, this means we're seeing an increase in fraudulent activity on member accounts. Criminals look forward to this time of year when people are moving money around for holiday shopping or travel and are less likely to notice the activity.

This year especially, we're seeing instances of account takeover, where a criminal uses stolen information to access a member's account online, change their communication and alert preferences, and initiate large transfers. These criminals often target members who do not utilize online or mobile banking and are not checking their account balance.

We'd like to remind our members to regularly monitor their account activity, online profiles, and monthly statements. If you are someone who does not use e-services, you also have the option to call the credit union anytime and use our automated teller system. Please be aware that the credit union will always notify members when any profile information-- including phone number and email addresses-- has been changed. It is imperative that you open and read all mail you receive from BAFCU

If you believe you may be a victim of identity theft and/or account takeover, please contact the credit union immediately for assistance. Our member service representatives will help navigate your individual situation and suggest next steps. Our number one priority is your financial security and wellbeing.
